Fields of Interest and Expertise

Detection of the occurrence of oxidative stress in biological samples by selecting the more suitable biomarkers and study of the intracellular and extracellular mechanisms for the antioxidant defense.

Study of the vasorelaxant properties of nitric oxide donors.

Pre-clinic study of new compounds with potential therapeutic role and evaluation of their eventual effect on physiological antioxidants.

Study on the effect of modulating the intra-and extracellular redox equilibrium for the progression of several pathological conditions.

March 1996: Degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Siena, vote 110/110 cum laude. Title of the thesis: Alteration of the hematic thiolic state in rat after in vivo treatment with diamide”.

January 2001: PhD in Morphological Sciences and Lymphatology at the University of Siena, with a final thesis: “Vasodilating effect of nitrosothiols: a biochemical and morpho-functional study”.

2002-2005: Post-doctoral fellowship at the Department of Neurosciences, Pharmacology Section, University of Siena. Title of the project: “Biochemical and pharmacological analysis of nitrosothiols”.

2006: Post-doctoral fellowship at the Department of Physiopathology, Experimental Medicine and Public Health, University of Siena. Title: “Analysis of oxidative stress for the pathogenesis of pulmonary pathologies in animal models”.

2007-2009: Post-doctoral fellowship at the Department of Evolutionary Biology, University of Siena Title of the project: “Evaluation of the biological action of endogenous and exogenous nitrosothiols”.

2010: Post-doctoral fellowship at the Department of Evolutionary Biology, University of Siena. Title of the project: “Pre-clinic study of novel anti-inflammatory non steroidal drugs with reduced gastric toxicity”.

December 2010: Visiting researcher at the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas (USA).

2011-2012: Post-doctoral fellowship at the Department of Evolutionary Biology, University of Siena. Title of the project: “Treatment with bosentan of patients affected by systemic sclerosis: analysis of both the oxido-reductive status and the biomarkers of nitric oxide production and evaluation of the clinic efficacy of the drug”.

2013-2015: Post-doctoral fellowship in the Pharmacology Sector at the Department of Life Sciences, University of Siena. Title of the project: “Evaluation of the effect of silimarin and N-acetylcisteine in the oxido-reductive status in patients affected by diabetic nephropathy”.
